Farmland Protection

Genesee Valley Conseravncy partners with Livingston and Wyoming County to seek New York State funding for local farmland protection projects.

NYS Purchase of Development Rights Grants

The Purchase of Development Rights grants pays a farmer to place a conservation easement on the farm in order to protect productive farmland and limit non-agricultural development.  The farmer retains ownership of the land, use, and management of the farm; however, the land will have permanent restrictions on commercial, residential and industrial uses in perpetuity.

This is a very competitive program across the State and locally.  The grant pays a farmer up to 87.5% of the value of the development rights on the land and 87.5% of the project costs.

2017 Livingston County Pre-Application

Due to limited funding and the high level of interest locally, Livingston County farmers must complete a pre-application and meet a set of eligibility criteria to be considered for the State grant.  These pre-applications are ranked by the Agricultural & Farmland Protection Board and the top farms are invited to work with Genesee Valley Conservancy on submitting an application to NYS.

Livingston County will select three farms, of which not more than two will be larger than 400 acres, to apply to New York State Round 15 Purchase of Development grants.
