Oak Tree Kicks Off 10th Annual Geneseo Trio

This year marks the 10th running of the Geneseo Trio, a series of three 5k races taking place in the Village of Geneseo each fall.  While each race has a longer individual history, it was 10 years ago that the three races joined together and first crowned the fastest male and female in Geneseo.

The series consists of the Oak Tree 5K (September 2), Friday Knight 5K (September 21) and the Ramon Rocha 5k (October 20).  Each of these races is organized to benefit a local not-for-profit or educational institution.  Finishing times for each race are added together to give each participant their series time.  The male and female with the lowest overall times win the series and bragging rights for the year.

The Oak Tree 5K takes place alongside the Oak Tree Half Marathon on Labor Day weekend to kick-off the Geneseo Trio.  This race is organized by the Genesee Valley Conservancy in support of their local conservation work.  The race also supports the Geneseo Central School cross country teams which help put on the event.

The SUNY Geneseo Cross Country and Track and Field Teams organize the Friday Knight 5K each year to raise funds for their program on the campus of SUNY Geneseo.  The Knights have made 15 consecutive NCAA Division III Championship appearances and consistently perform as a top program in the Country.

The Ramon Rocha 5K finishes the series this year, raising funds for The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming, an organization providing service to developmentally disabled individuals and their families from birth to end-of-life.

First run in 2009, the series was established as a partnership between these three 5ks to motivate locals to get in shape and remain in shape as part of leading a healthy lifestyle.  Ideally, runners and walkers use this series of races to create a healthy and active lifestyle that they maintain all year.

Last year, ten year old Catherine Staley set a new female record for the combined races with her time of 1 hour and one second.  The male record is currently held by Avon’s Josh Harter at 50:24 for the three 5ks.

Details for the series can be found online.

The Geneseo Trio is supported by GioVanna’s Pizza and Pasta.  Located in Geneseo, GioVanna’s provides fresh food at each race to support the runners and the organizations behind these great fall events.
