Oak Tree Funds Education of All Ages
As a charitable race, 100% of registration fees support the non-profit work of the Genesee Valley Conservancy. This work includes providing public access and educational opportunities.
The Half Marathon and 5K start next to the John W. Chanler Island Preserve. This 40acre nature preserve has over a mile of public trails accessible from Lima Road and the main entrance on Cavalry Drive, across from Geneseo Central School.
The close proximity to Geneseo Central makes this preserve a prime place for students to visit for class projects. Every student graduating from Geneseo Central has visited the Island Preserve for at least one class and a majority have used the property many times for a wide variety of purposes.
Art classes use the property for digital photography, science classes practice field methods for species sampling and inventorying. The cross country team even uses the trails to warm up before practice!
The central school is not alone in its use of this property. Just down the street, students and faculty from the State University of NY at Geneseo also utilize the John W. Chanler Island Preserve to conduct research and complete science labs on the preserve grounds. There is ongoing research on house wrens and science classes practice field sampling techniques at the preserve.
While all of this research and education is going on, the property is open to the public to enjoy the trails. There are a wide variety of grassland birds nesting on the property, fox, and all sorts of other fun bits of nature to see and enjoy whether you make a one-time visit or include the trails as part of your evening routine.
