Grant to Help Protect Wetlands Along Honeoye Creek

A major land acquisition project is moving forward thanks in part to funding from the Climate Resilience Grant Program of The Nature Conservancy.

While similar in name and in work, Genesee Valley Conservancy is completely independent.

A $50,000 grant will help support the acquisition of 199 acres of wetlands and uplands along the Honeoye Creek in Richmond, Ontario County.

This area is a critical water retention area and provides important habitat - it is one of very few locations sandhill cranes are known to breed in western and central NY.

This project will also connect existing conservation areas together and to roads, which will make for cheaper and easier stewardship and increased opportunities for public recreation and educational uses.

Genesee Valley Conservancy is using our dedicated Acquisitions Fund to help acquire these lands, which will be transferred to New York State to expand their existing ownership in this critial area. The grant funds will support the financing of a mortgage as part of this key acquisition.
